2010 WAKULLA AREA SWINE SHOW

Grand Champion Market Hog belonged to Gabe Barwick. The Reserve Champion market hog was Landon Turner.

Class Winner I was Cody James. Class Winner II was Mariann Jones. Class Winner III was Louie Jones. Class Winner IV and V was Gabe Barwick. Showmanship award for the 15-16 year old group went to Johnny Piland, 13-14 year old winner was Seth Whiddon, 11-12 year olds was Colton McCulley, 9-10 was Gabe Barwick, and 8 year old was Louie Jones.

Special Awards were presented to Tanner Gainer, who received the Marjorie Winter Spirit Award;  the Herdsman Award went to Lincoln Porter; President's Excellence Award to Johnny Piland; and Largest Hog in Show, Grayson Lewis. Honorary awards went to Travis Henderson and Shelby Osbourne.

For Record Book Competition, 15 years old and older, Amanda Piland took a blue ribbon; Johnny Piland, red; and Branden Piland, white.

Record Book completion pins went to Grayson Lewis for his project book; Kristen Chew received a white; Amanda Piland, blue; Johnny Piland, red; Branden Piland, white; Louie Jones, red; Mariann Jones, red; and Randall Sutton, white.

In the junior division, first place high individual went to Gabe Barwick of Wakulla; second place to Lincoln Porter of Wakulla; third place, Tyler Lawrence of Jackson County.

In the intermediate division, Dylan Welch of Wakulla took first place; Randall Sutton of Wakulla, second; Seth Whiddon of Wakulla, third.

The first place junior division team was from Wakulla, Louie Jones, Mariann Jones and Gabe Barwick. The second place team was also from Wakulla, Lincoln Porter, Hunter Lawhon, and Trenton Lawhon.

The intermediate division team for first place was from Wakulla, Colton McCulley, Dylan Welch, Randall Sutton, and Seth Whiddon.

In 4-H Swine Judging, senior division, Blair Burks of Jackson County took first place; Alan Toole of Jackson took second place; and Amanda Piland of Wakulla placed third.

In Senior Division Team, first place went to the team from Jackson County, Alan Toole, Austin Pittman, Blair Burks, and Haley Dime.

Second Place Team  was from Wakulla, Amanda Piland, Johnny Piland, Branden Piland, and Cody James.

Third grader grows a giant cabbage
As the cabbage continued to grow, Carla Dickens and her daughter Morgan questioned if it in fact was a cabbage at all. Morgan grew the plant for the Bonnie Plant's Third Grade Cabbage Program which gives away cabbage plants to third graders all over the United States.

Restoration of Sopchoppy depot and its history
In 1991 I was the author of five historical articles about the towns, commerce, activities and life which occurred along the old Georgia, Florida and Alabama Railroad, including the town of Sopchoppy, which was published in The Wakulla News from October 24, 1991 to September 17, 1992, all of which are on file at the Wakulla County Public Library.
