The War Eagle basketball team hit the road last week and played three games in Tallahassee. The team went 1-2 for the week and their overall record now stands at 3-17.
• On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the team played a district contest at Godby. The Cougars have dominated most teams this season and the War Eagles were no exception.
Godby broke out early and often and even though Wakulla handled Godby’s full court press much better than in their first contest, the War Eagles simply did not convert on easy transition opportunities and also handled the ball poorly while running their half-court offense. The final score was 69-30 in favor of Godby. Justin Willoughby led the way with 14 points, four assists and three steals.
Greg Thomas had five points, six rebounds and two blocks.
• On Thursday, Jan. 28, Wakulla visited FAMU High and came out flat missing several lay-ups and open jump shots.
“We were ice cold for three quarters and then it was too late to get back into the game even though our guys rallied by hustling and pressing their way to the end,” said Head Coach Michael Sweatt. The final score favored FAMU High 60-38. Greg Thomas had 10 points and six rebounds while Mikal Cromartie had nine points, four assists and three steals. Antonio Kilpatick had eight points and Nickola Shingles had six points, seven rebounds and five steals.
Friday, Jan. 29 turned out to be a big night for the Wakulla squad as the War Eagles upset North Florida Christian by a score of 54-48. The War Eagles continued their effort from the fourth quarter on Thursday’s game as they pressed and pressured NFC for four quarters and came away with 17 steals as a team. The War Eagles also had their best night of the season from the free throw line making 22 of 30 free throws. Antonio Kilpatrick had 13 points, including 9 of 11 from the free throw line, four assists and three steals. Takija Knight had 11 points, 9 of 12 from the line, nine rebounds, and two blocks. Willoughby had six points and three steals and Nickola
Shingles had eight rebounds.
The War Eagles hosted Chiles on Feb. 2 before tonight’s game, Thursday, Feb. 4, featuring Senior Night as the War Eagles take on John Paul II.
The 30 year reunion of the 1980 state championship team takes place Feb. 5 as Wakulla hosts North Florida Christian at 7 p.m.
