Sixth grader Kathryn Eck scored the first run for the Riversprings Middle School Bears softball team in their season opener on Feb. 11. The game , ended with a 6-1 victory.
The Lady Bears continued their winning streak through week two of softball season defeating Trinity and rival Wakulla Middle School.
The RMS softball team traveled to Tallahassee and brought home a “W” against Trinity Middle School on Tuesday, Feb. 15.The Lady Bears scored for 3 runs in the first inning. Hitting stars included Kayla Hussey who had a double and three RBI’s and sixth grader Bailee Sullivan who drove in two runs. Amy Walker pitched a complete game.
“We have a passel of players who try to flat out knock the cover off the ball,” said Coach Jessica Wells. "This game gave all of our girls plenty of at-bat and playing time which strengthened our depth chart,” noted Coach Wells.
On Wednesday, Feb. 17, Riversprings took on rival Wakulla Middle, and both teams made a statement on the diamond by competing in seven innings on a frigid afternoon.
“It’s hard to hit and harder to pitch when it’s cold like this,” Coach Wells said. Amy Walker started the rally with a single in the bottom of the sixth inning that brought Riversprings to a 3-2 lead and the win.
Taylor Hussey dominated and owned the mound with 13 strike-outs. Kayla Hussey turned an impressive double play at first and at-bat earned two RBI’s and a score. Shakayla Nixon played tough and scored twice.
The Riversprings Bears Softball Team players are Ashley Carroll, Kathryn Eck, Courtney Eichler, Courtney Eichler, Kaelee Hill, Kayla Hussey, Taylor Hussey, Savannah Kelley, Shakayla Nixon, Savannah Poulson, Bailee Sullivan, Amy Walker, Rebecca Weirbeck and Team Manager, Alex Dutton.
Upcoming games include Trinity Middle School on March 1 at home, Taylor County in Perry on March 2, and Florida High at home on March 4.
This is Coach Wells' first year as the head softball coach, but with 17 years of softball experience, she’s a veteran on the field. Coach Wells played collegiate ball for the FSU Seminoles and the University of Georgia Bulldis Assistant Coach Briana Fordham played softball for WHS and Chipola College.
