Four students transported to hospital

Wakulla County School Bus No. 115 left the road and crashed into a tree on Thursday, Feb. 16, at about 7 a.m. on Woodville Highway. Four of the 37 students on the bus were reportedly taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Students on the bus who were not injured were reportedly picked up by parents or transported to school by a separate Wakulla County School Bus.

Jim Griner, who handles security matters for the Wakulla County School Board, said there were reports that more students were transported to the hospital by their parents. He added that the district is working with FHP and would provide onboard video from the school bus.

According to FHP, the school bus was traveling southbound in the southbound lane of Woodville Highway. After passing through the intersection of Woodville Highway and Bloxham Cutoff Road , the bus left the roadway and onto the west shoulder of the roadway. The front of the school bus struck a large tree and came to final rest.

The driver of the bus, Terry Duane Laird, 65, suffered minor injuries, according to FHP, and was cited for failure to maintain lane of travel. He was also transported to the hospital.
