  • The Savvy Senior: When elderly drivers need to limit or stop driving

    Dear Savvy Senior,
I’m worried about my father’s driving. At age 84, his driving skills have diminished significantly, but I know he’s bound and determined to keep going as long as he’s alive. What tips can you recommend that can help me help my dad stop driving?

  • Seniors celebrate Chinese New Year, arrange flowers, paint watercolors, learn about bears, and sing karaoke

The January 2012 New Year brought cooler weather, but not quite the winter cold that we have experienced in past years. We started out the year with decorations commemorating the Chinese New Year.

  • R.H. Carter: Successful aging

The column published last month promoted CELEBRATING LIFE in the Senior Center. It did not discuss health education, screening or exercise.
This month we are discussing these issues and some lifestyles that will help you age successfully.
The health of your body and your brain depends on many factors. Some are in your control and some are not. It’s important to understand both.

  • The Savvy Senior: Are there still senior discounts on airfares?

    Dear Savvy Senior,
Do airlines still provide discounts to seniors on their airfares? My husband and I are retired and like to travel and are wondering which airlines offer the best discounts to budget conscious seniors.

     Dear Travelers,

  • Stay mentally fit by starting a 'health club' for your brain

    Special to The News

2012 is upon us and many of us are thinking about what the New Year will bring.
This time of year is an occasion to get us thinking about our health – specifically brain health.
Carve out time to give your brain work outs. You can do that by creating your own “health club” that includes ongoing learning.
Make a commitment to keep learning, no matter what your age or stage of life, and you are automatically improving your brain power.

  • Holidays celebrated with decorations, brunch, music, fruit, cookies and more

    of the Senior Center

“Tis the season to be jolly”…. That phrase was very fitting for the seniors in December.
Having warmer than usual weather, we needed to get into the spirit of the Christmas Holidays.
Tamara and her Tuesday craft class decked the halls with decorations for the tables and the Christmas tree, along with the beautiful wreaths on the walls.

  • Drive at Senior Center is celebrating life

The beginning of 2012 has caused me to stop and reflect on last year and plan for this coming year.
Our driving force is CELEBRATING LIFE. Plans to accomplish this include, Board, staff, volunteers and most of all , the seniors who attend the Senior Center.
We average about 60 seniors per day. Some days they exceed 100. Over a period of six months we will be visited by more than 200.

  • Contract bridge lessons coming up at Senior Center

An eight session class of beginning bridge will be held at the Crawfordville Senior Center starting on Friday, Jan. 13 at 12:30 p.m.

Each session will be held weekly on Friday for one hour. Duplicate contract bridge with partners will be played until 4:30 p.m.

There is no charge for persons 60 and older, others will be asked for a $2 donation to the Senior Center.

All lesson materials will be furnished and all you need is be ready to have some fun.  Come with a partner or come alone.

  • Autumn was full of fun activities for seniors

    Senior Center

As many of the trees in Wakulla County changed to their glorious autumn colors, so did the Senior Center as we prepared for Thanksgiving.

Fall colors showed up in our table decorations and beautiful wreaths that the seniors made.

Our Volunteer of the Year, Don Allen, rode in an antique pickup truck at the Veterans Day Parade and the Queen of the Senior Center, Charlotte Miller, waved her greetings to all and just had fun in a sporty convertible.
