    Be prepared.

    September has really seen the tropics pick up with intensity. Be prepared now for the next storm. Don’t wait until there is an evacuation notice given to get prepared. Here are a few things to keep in mind if a tropical storm approaches our area.

    Do not use candles for lighting. Instead use flashlights and have extra batteries.

    Do not use charcoal inside, even in a fireplace. It will give off carbon monoxide and that can kill you.

    Do not leave pets if you have to evacuate. Take them with you. There are shelters that are pet friendly.

  • Motorcyclist is critically injured

    A 29-year-old Crawfordville man was critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2:21 a.m. on Highway 363 south of Commerce Blvd., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

    Joshua H. Mathis was riding a 2007 Honda motorcycle southbound on Highway 363 when he traveled onto the west shoulder of the road striking a concrete curb. The motorcycle overturned and ejected Mathis. The motorcycle came to final rest on the west shoulder of the highway facing east.

  • 200 dogs and other animals are seized in an alleged ‘Puppy Mill’

    Wakulla County Animal Control filed a motion for the court to decide what should happen with dogs and other animals at an alleged “puppy mill” off Lower Bridge Road.

    The motion filed is a civil matter, not criminal. No criminal charges have been filed at this time against the owners of the land, Wallace and Cathy Bailey.

  • Teen fires shot at deputy in chase

    A 17-year-old Leon County teenager faces eight felony charges and one misdemeanor charge stemming from an attempted burglary and vehicle chase in Wakulla and Leon counties early Monday, Sept. 15, according to Major Maurice Langston of the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Sheriff’s Report 9-18

    Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office officials are investigating the grand theft of a propane grill reported Sept. 10 by William T. Sapp of Crawfordville, according to Sheriff David Harvey.

    The grill is valued at $480 and a person of interest has been identified. The grill was taken from a location near the victim’s home. Deputy William T. Hudson’s investigation continues.

  • Sheriff's Report 9-25

    Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office officials are investigating a grand theft reported Sept. 18 by a female Sopchoppy resident, according to Sheriff David Harvey.

    The victim was attempting to use a debit card at a local store when the card was not accepted.

    She went to the local bank and discovered that numerous transactions had been made on her account involving an airline in India. The charges on the account totaled $4,398 through 65 transactions. The case was turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division. Deputy Ben Steinle investigated.

  • Court Shorts 9-25

    A 29-year-old reputed gang member was sentenced to 20 years in prison for violating his probation by possessing two pistols. The man, Daniel Marion, had gone so far as to post pictures of himself and another man posing with the guns on his Myspace page.

    At a violation of probation hearing on Thursday, Sept. 11, Marion claimed the pictures on his Myspace page were taken before he had gotten in trouble with the law, and that the two firearms seized at his Volusia County apartment were different weapons that belonged to his girlfriend.

  • Firing range is open to public

    Wakulla County Sheriff David Harvey has opened the law enforcement firing range to the public. The firing range is located off Qualify Lane, in the Otter Creek Community. The firing range has been open for nearly 15 years, but has been for law enforcement use only. Recently, the range and facilities were assigned to Sheriff Harvey to oversee and manage.

    A man being held in the Wakulla County Jail turns out not to be who he said he is.

    The inmate, Dennis Hapney, allegedly stole the identity of the real Dennis Hapney in Michigan. The Hapney in jail turns out to be Jimmie Michael Adkins.

    The issue came out when the real Dennis Hapney’s Social Security benefits stopped, and he went to a Social Security Administration office to find out why. He was told it was because Dennis Hapney was in jail in Wakulla County, Fla.

    Deputy Ward Kromer went to interview Adkins at the jail on Friday, Sept. 26.

  • Sheriff's Report 10-9

    A man who reported the theft of tools and a rifle from a shed at his Summerwind Circle home, had his property recovered a couple of days after making the report.
