The precious, vintage diamond that has sparkled on a finger of the St. Marks coastline for 147 years has been temporarily removed as it is preserved in its prismatic glory.
The Fresnel lens, installed in 1867, was carefully lowered from the lantern room atop the St. Marks Lighthouse to the ground with a 125-foot manlift on Thursday, Nov. 20. The project to stabilize, preserve and restore the lens by the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association will be ongoing for the next few months.
