Back in 2005, a group of citizens from throughout Wakulla County came together to see how we could improve our downtown Crawfordville area from a business, transportation and community perspective.

This is to correct some commonly held myths and misperceptions about Florida’s Juvenile Justice System.
For each myth, we’ve provided a response with links to research and documentation that provides the facts.

Myth: Juvenile delinquency is increasing in Florida.
Fact: Delinquency in Florida is down and has been declining for several years.

Myth: More girls are entering the delinquency system.
Fact: Fewer girls are entering the delinquency system.

It occurs to me that raising children today is more difficult than ever.
When I was a child, I could roam my neighborhood playing with friends. We walked to school, came home for lunch and played outside until the street lights came on.
Sometime either before or after there was homework and chores. Life seemed so much simpler then.

  • Wakulla Springs is renowned for its unique boat tours that have been offered since the mid 1800s.
Dining or spending the night in the historic lodge or taking a plunge in the massive spring are other unique opportunities offered. It is a travel destination for both locals and those who come from afar and who contribute significantly to the local economy.
In today’s tough economic times, ideas are often touted as good for the local economy. But in some cases new activities can have a significant impact on existing activities.

  • Most of us know the story of King Solomon’s judgment. Two women brought a child before the king, claiming it as their own. Wise Solomon asked for a sword, so that he might divide the child in two, giving each woman one-half of the baby. The child’s true mother cried out, and begged the king not to cut her baby in two.
King Solomon knew that the child’s true mother would care more for her child’s life than for her pride, and so he gave the child to the first woman.
A parallel to this story is unfolding before us now.

In light of the recent news events of this past week, with the killing of Osama bin Laden and those who were with him, I am both horrified and sickened by the actions and the words of some who call themselves Christians.
I realize that this written statement will go against the grain of many, but I invite you to listen (and read) before you make a final judgment on my conviction.

  • Editor, The News:

I was surprised and saddened this week when I heard about plans to widen Mt. Beasor Road, plans that include cutting down the huge trees that lend this small community its charm and grace.

  • My youngest daughter was sprawled in the TV room the other day, some crummy reality TV show blaring, a TV tray in front of her with junk food on it, and she complained to me that she was bored.

“To say you’re bored means you have no inner resources,” I answered, paraphrasing a line from a John Berryman poem.

“I don’t know what that means,” she shrugged. “But I’m still bored.”

  • Ever since I wrote about a recent visit to a gun shop, my guy friends have been appearing magically before me to offer their hard-earned wisdom about the use of firearms.

The first lesson is always: “Don’t believe everything you hear!”

I’m especially fortunate because a good friend knows a whole lot about guns. He is another man most generous in dispensing information and support. Recently, he gave me a great big “attaboy” for doubling my gun collection.

  • When my kids were little they called their father, Daddy Doggie. I don’t know why. It seems like the name might have come from a cartoon on TV back then, but I just can’t remember. (I’m old, you know.)

Anyhow, when I mentioned this to Nurse Judy, my alter ego, she was aghast. “That’s so disrespectful,” she proclaimed.

“Why do you say that?” I asked surprised by her response.

“Even if most men are dogs,” she replied, “children shouldn’t be calling them that.”

  • I’ve been thinking...

About things that don’t bother me.

    by Marj Law

A lot of things don’t bother me that do bother other people. Like my friends, for instance. Of course, some of my friends might be a little, well, maybe a little... persnickety.

Let me give an example. The doorbell stops dinging. This is a bit annoying, but it’s not critical in the grand scheme of things. Doesn’t bother me too much.

  • Candidate calls law over alleged bar fight

    By WILLIAM SNOWDEN

The whole matter may be best described as much ado about nothing: There was a police report, but no charges. The deputy investigating an alleged fight at Capt. SeaNile's Pub between two women determined the allegations were unfounded. One of the women filed to have an injunction against the other woman and her husband, but then didn't show up for the court date – so nothing officially happened there either.

  • Being the new person anywhere, at school or at work, can be intimidating and sometimes scary. Scary because there's typically an aspect that is unknown. A lot of people fear the unknown, which in turn leaves us scared and intimidated.

However, if we don't venture out into the unknown, we may miss out on things. I am embracing the new aspects of my life and I am excited about them.

On March 25, I wrote an email to state Rep. Marti Coley asking what she is doing to combat the House Companion Bill to the Senate Bill (SB6) on teacher pay.

"Will you take a stand in favor of teachers, students, and education in your district and the entire state of Florida? Please consider sponsoring an alternate bill that will offer a reasonable plan for ensuring teacher accountability and student success. Educators like myself stand ready and willing to help write this legislation — just ask!"
