  • Coast Guard Auxiliary Reports 5.21

    It was an unbelievably quiet week for our local Coast Guard Auxiliary units,

    Flotilla 12 at St. Marks and Flotilla 13 at Shell Point. However, next weekend will be different.

    As previously announced, Flotilla 12 will teach a Basic Navigation course on May 23. Anyone interested in the class should contact the public education officer, Larry Kolk, at 877-0818.

    Also next Saturday, Steve Hults, the Vessel Examination Staff Officer, will be at the old fort boat ramp in St. Marks to conduct free boat inspections. Other examiners may be there, too.

  • Catch of the Day

    Mary Kate Lettera, secretary/treasurer of Plantation Security Inc., enjoyed a day of fishing with her father, husband and twin 1 year old sons. They fished inshore reefs out of Shell Point with light tackle and live bait. Dozens of juvenile gag grouper were caught and released.

  • Arbor Day book offered

    The Arbor Day Foundation recently updated its Conservation Trees booklet, and it is now available for a $3 donation by contacting the Foundation.

    Conservation Trees is designed to help people plant and care for trees.

    “The Arbor Day Foundation believes it is vital for people of all walks of life to plant new trees and to take care of our existing tree canopy,” said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Foundation. “This booklet serves as a great resource for tree planters in every area of the country.

  • May 16 to May 22 is Safe Boating Week

    Although Florida’s boating season never really ends, National Safe Boating Week and Memorial Day weekend mark the traditional beginning around the country.

    Gov. Charlie Crist and Cabinet members recently passed a resolution proclaiming May 16 to May 22 National Safe Boating Week in Florida.

  • FWC meets in Tallahassee

    The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wrapped up its two-day session Thursday, April 16, in Tallahassee. During the meeting at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center, commissioners dealt with a variety of issues.

  • Blue crabs, boating and alligators

    Blue crab penalties

    The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved a rule on Thursday, April 16 that will establish administrative penalties for violations of provisions of the Blue Crab Effort Management Program.

    This program was developed by the FWC to manage the use of traps in Florida’s commercial blue crab fishery.

    These administrative penalties are authorized by Florida statute (Section 379.366, F.S.) and will apply to violations such as untagged traps, trap molestation, illegal barter of tags and trap theft.

  • Wakulla fishing catches yield redfish and river carp

    Cay Davis, 9, above, caught a 27 inch redfish while fishing near the St. Marks Ligthouse on May 2. She reeled the fish in herself and was assisted with the netting by her mother, Margaret.

    Wayne Haase of Sopchoppy  displayed his 30 pound carp he caught in the Sopchoppy River. The carp was caught using a Sopchoppy worm on an eight pound test line. After marveling at the catch in a wheelbarrow, the big fish was returned to his home in the Sopchoppy River.

  • Two new Forest bridges planned

    Two wooden bridges on Forest Service Road 115 in the Apalachicola National Forest will soon be replaced. Work will begin on or before June 1, and should be completed by mid-October. A section of FSR 115 will be closed to all traffic during this project. The Federal Highway Administration has entered into a contract with Hale Construction to replace the bridges located approximately two to three miles from the intersection of FSR 115 and CR 379. The project includes the demolition and removal of the wooden bridges and the installation of concrete box culverts with metal guardrails.

  • Month of May should bring fishermen better news

    It was an absolutely gorgeous weekend except for the winds on Sunday. Fortunately I didn’t fish Sunday, but I know those who did said it was very rough. This week is supposed to be nice and excellent tides all week mean good fishing.
