  • Frosty weather returns to have an impact on the water

Well it looks as if our fishing will change totally by the weekend. The cold mornings we are expected to have Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning will probably drop the water temperature into the mid 50s and will send the trout and reds searching deep holes in the creeks and rivers or in the case of Spring Creek to the boils.

  • Late night results in special redfish

Last week 10-year-old Daniel Lamarche got to stay up late before school started on Tuesday, Jan. 6. He said he wanted to fish for redfish off the family dock. At about 10 p.m. he ran up stairs all excited, telling everyone about the big redfish that got away when he tried to lift it onto the dock. His father Danny went back down to stay with him and man the landing net if he got another one.

Sure enough, about midnight, this redfish bit and Little Daniel fought him to the dock where his father netted it. Little Daniel said the one that got away earlier was much bigger.

  • Coast Guard Auxiliary Reports 01.15

Saturday evening, Flotilla 13 held its first 2009 meeting at the Shell Point Auxiliary station. The agenda was packed and the meeting moved along at a rapid pace. Our newly elected Flotilla Commander, Mae Waters, had prepared organized handouts for each staff officer.

Five of the 2009 staff officers were present and their installation was conducted by Lynne Reese. It was impressive and heart warming. Seeing two new faces, along with faithful “oldtimers” gave one a feeling that 2009 is going to be a very good year.

  • Edible landscaping meeting is slated

  • Black bears continue to visit St. Marks

Hi neighbors. The holidays are finally over and maybe things will get back to normal. I really have a hard time with holidays and it kind of knocks me in a hole. That is one reason I haven’t been writing our column, plus no one seems interested in getting news into our column now. But I will try to keep it going.

Neighbors, we all know I love this weather but it seems the black bears do, too. They are still out there roaming the neighborhoods, throwing garbage and causing problems. Please keep your small pets and children inside after dark.

  • Refuge hosts sign dedication

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) staff will host a sign-dedication event at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. During the past month, signs designating top birding sites along the Great Florida Birding Trail have been installed throughout the Panhandle. The FWC will mark the occasion with a special sign installation. From 9 a.m. to noon, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service volunteer will provide birding tours by vehicle throughout the refuge. After the sign installation, FWC staff will offer birding tours by vehicle as well.

  • Officials gear up for another regatta

The Stephen C. Smith Regatta is scheduled for April 24 to April 26 at Shell Point to benefit the American Cancer Society in the memory of Stephen Smith. Smith was a local sailor who died from leukemia at the age of 29.

The memorial event is presented by the Apalachee Bay Yacht Club, Shell Point Sailboard Club and the American Cancer Society. The event includes offshore racing yachts, dinghies, catamarans and windsurfers.

  • Birds are an evolutionary miracle and a gift from God

Birds are a gift from God, an evolutionary miracle, or both. Whatever you believe, we all marvel at their songs, their ability to survive brutally cold winters and most of all, their amazing ability to fly. How many times have we all stood staring up at a bird soaring above us and contemplated how neat it would be to be able to fly.

And I’m sure like myself, you’ve all dreamed of flying. Plus in the last few decades, it has been pretty well established that they may actually be living dinosaurs, technically not all dinosaurs actually became extinct!

  • Cold weather takes a bite out of the fishing opportunities

The cold weather last week knocked the fishing in the head around here, or at least for me. With the extremely cold weather we had last week I just knew the fish were going to be in the Aucilla River. Wendell Burton and I went down in his boat and my neighbor and a friend went in theirs. The first bad sign was when we stopped at J.R.’s store. When I saw J.R., he just shook his head. He told us the fish just weren’t in the Aucilla or at least nobody was catching any. He said one person had been to the Econfina and caught some.

  • Coast Guard Auxiliary Reports 01.22

This weekend, we heard several gunshots off of Shell Point. Many hunters use vessels for migratory bird hunting or to get to their favorite hunting grounds. If you are using your vessel to hunt, you should remember the following safety advice:
