  • First Sunday will feature owls and night birds

The First Sunday at the Refuge Presentation Series will feature “Owls and Other Night Birds at St. Marks” with Don Morrow of The Trust for Public Lands on Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.
Owls aren’t the only birds that come out at night. Don will tell about birds of the night and share their habits, how to identify them, and where you are likely to find them. Linger afterward for a short twilight field trip with Don.

  • Carlie's first deer is an 11-point buck

Carlie Coleman, 9, of Crawfordville, shot her first deer with her sidekick Daddy.
The buck was an 11 pointer and weighed 180 pounds.
Carlie, who attends Wakulla Christian School, was shining like a Christmas tree.
It was a great daddy-daughter moment to remember.

  • A lot of folks were on the water, but not a lot of fish were caught

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and didn’t eat too much turkey.
There were a lot of folks on the water over this way but not a lot of fish caught. The tides didn’t move that much over the past weekend and I’m hoping that was the problem.
I talked with Bucky at Shell Island Fish Camp in St. Marks and he said the fishing down there was pretty good over the weekend. Some came in with their limit while others had a tough time.

    What brings tourists

Every year my staff and I travel to the Diving Equipment Manufacturing Association (which also includes dive travel) DEMA. We then drive on to visit suppliers all the way up to Washington State. Thousands of dive operations (stores, travel destinations, manufacturers, environmental groups and training agencies) all converge to inspect each other and promote their cause. Their displays fill a convention center for four days, spilling into the night with after hour meetings brokering deals and generally moving the industry forward.

  • From the Dock: More big white trout this year

So far this fall has been absolutely gorgeous. We had a couple of days when the weather was bad, but most have been very nice and very fishable.
The water temperature really cooled down with the cool nights we had last week and the water clarity went from dingy to gin-clear almost overnight.
I have fished the flats and some of the outer bars, which were loaded up with reds before the cool and have not been able to find anything. Everything has either been out real deep or around the oyster bars.

    Cold Water Diving

We know when the ocean water temperature begins its decline when the clambers and UW bridge inspectors show up asking for thicker thermal protection. Most everyone else have hung up their fins for the year and are oiling up their rifles for hunting season. As the winter diving season progresses, thermal requests moves from thicker wet suit to dry suits. There are plenty of challenges involved in finding the warmest solution for you investment. The question is where to start and what is the progression?
