  • Forest Service has plans for 219...

The U.S Forest Service has proposed to release 219 acres of longleaf pine seedlings from competing woody vegetation using a combination of herbicides and mowing. The project area is located in compartments 302, 315, 316, 318, and 320 within the Wakulla Ranger District, Apalachicola National Forest, Wakulla County. This action is needed, because the woody vegetation is overtopping the longleaf pine seedlings planted to reforest these areas after the Cowhouse Wildfire.

  • Trout season opens, winds, cold...

Trout season opened back up on Sunday, but the trout didn’t have anything to worry about. First of all, I can’t imagine anybody would have been fishing in 35 mile an hour winds, and secondly I doubt if they would have caught anything. A few more cool days at the beginning of the week and then it will start warming back up. By the weekend the trout should be biting if the water temperature doesn’t get too cold the first of the week. There are plenty of reds around and I believe we’re going to have one heck of a fishing season.

  • Mills, Piasecki, McHugh top...

Shannon Mills of Crawfordville won the Best of Show with her “Otter’s Breakfast” entry. It showed a curious otter snacking on a meal on the Mills’ property.

She will receive a $50 cash prize and one night stay at the Portofino Island Resort and Spa in Pensacola Beach.

  • Coast Guard Auxiliary Reports 03...

“Brr, it is cold out here,” I said as I stepped out the door on my way to church. I really felt like we were in Eskimo Land. Then, when I came home, my youngest son, Ron, called to report that there were two and a half inches snow in Columbus, Ga. It was then that I remembered what a native Floridian told me the day we were moving to Florida.

“If you don’t like the weather, just wait awhile and it will change.” I am hoping for warmer weather.

  • Wakulla Springs News and Notes

It had been a long time coming. But Wakulla Spring had once again been showered with the gasps of oohs and aahs as the glass bottom boat floated over the spring’s abyss. On Monday, Feb. 23, the first glass bottom boat tours since the second weekend in April 2008 coursed their way to the azure blue hole. Why the great spring’s water cleared now is still a mystery. How long the water clarity will last is unknown. It is unsafe to assume that the water will remain clear for any extended period.

Wakulla youth baseball players on the 12B Cal Ripken All-Star baseball team finished second in the state July 10 through July 13 in Ocala. Coach Rocky Strickland said the team played very well as the youngest squad competing.

“We made our presence known in the first inning against Tallahassee District Champ Meridian American that we were there to win,” said Strickland.

Raleigh Strickland hit a mammoth homerun over the left field fence. Tallahassee fought back to take a 7-3 lead before Wakulla tied the score at 7-7.
