Animal shelter challenges : Want to help?

-A A +A

The No. 1 way people can help is by getting their pets spayed or neutered.
Carroll and Brinson said male dogs can smell female dogs in heat from 3 to 5 miles away. The male dogs become aggressive and do whatever they can to get to the female dog.
Another way to stop the stray epidemic is by not feeding stray cats.
“One lady brought in 31 cats that her aunt had been feeding over the years,” Carroll said.
Carroll said stray cats will not stay where there is no food, and they also aren’t as likely to reproduce if they’re not healthy.
